Painter, sculptor 1958 - 1990
With kind permission of The Keith Haring foundation.
Keith Haring was born on May 4, 1958 in Reading, Pennsylvania, and was raised in nearby Kutztown, Pennsylvania. He died of AIDS related complications at the age of 31 on February 16, 1990. A memorial service was held on May 4, 1990 at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, with over 1,000 people in attendance.
In his own words:
"People always ask me: 'Where did you get all these ideas?' I say, I'm not sure, I only know that I'm living now in the 20th century and I absorb information at an increasingly rapid rate. We all do. Information, is coming from all kinds of sources, new sources every day. Technology is moving faster, perhaps, than we can keep up with. I digest information from these sources, channel it through my own imagination, and put it back out into the world."
